New kitten with older cat..safety..?
I just got an 8 week male kitten today, my 5 yr old female is less than pleased. Should I keep the kitten in my room tonight to protect him from her or let them learn to be nice? I’ve had him for about 6 hours now, and he wont leave my side.
You should keep him separate for a few days. Let them be together when you’re there to watch them but I wouldn’t leave them unsupervised alone together. To your female cat, he’s an unwelcome intruder in her territory and it will likely take a while for her to adjust.
We got a 10 week old kitten and our 7 year-old cat was *pissed* for about a week. It takes cats a while to get used to each other and feel they are part of the same group and smell is a big part of that. We would pet one, then the other to get them used to each other’s smells.
