Cat scratching post question?

Well I’ve just gotten my kitten a cat scratching post (it’s more of a tree though as it’s multi-leveled and about 7 feet high) and he’s not scratching it. Not only that he’s not scratching anything.
It’s been a few days and where normally he’d go to his “scratching spots” he hasn’t but he hasn’t scratched the post either.
He just likes sleeping on the top and looking out the window.
I don’t know what’s wrong with him.
What do you think I should do?

Cats love to be on high, and it seems like the cat tree is a perfect gift for him.

I wouldn’t be too concerned that he is not scratching on things. For one thing, even if a cat scratches on the side of a couch, it doesn’t mean he wants a vertical scratching surface. Many prefer a horizontal surface, and for that I use inexpensive cardboard scratchers. But I also have three cat trees in the house (I have multiple cats) and their climbing up and down, scratching on the carpeted perches, and also using the sisal posts does a great job of allowing them to ignore my furniture.

Sometimes it takes them awhile to get to use a vertical scratching post. Several of mine would climb up the sisal posts long before they decided to scratch on it. And that was even with plenty of evidence of use by other cats on the posts.

As far as putting catnip on the post, you need to know if your cat is sensitive to catnip. Sensitivity to catnip is inherited, so about half of all cats are not interested. Even if both parents are sensitive to catnip, the kitten only has a 75% chance of being sensitive.

As far as what you should do, you should applaud. It is a lot easier answering a non-scratching question, then what to do if your cat is scratching everything and everywhere.
