Taking cat in cabin for international flight?
I’m moving back to France, and I’m bringing my 8 month old kitty with me. I already checked with the airline and I decide to take him in the cabin with me. I know I have to get a carrier that has the right size and the right weight and thats not a problem.
I wanted to know what I should do for my cat during the trip. Should he have water with him? Is he going to hold 12 hours w/o going to the litter box?
My cat can meow a lot when things aren’t the way he wants, so should I put him on tranquilizer? how much does it cost?
As you can see I’m a little worried.. lol Anyhelp will be greatly appreciated, even if you answer only one of my questions. Thx!
I took my previous cat with me on three international flights both in the cabin and as cargo. My vet strongly recommended against the use of sedatives because it makes it difficult for the cat to regulate it’s body temperature at high altitudes. Many airlines prefer that cats are not sedated because of the health risks. They will however require that your cat is treated for parasite in the 48 hours preceeding the flight and that you have a certificate from your vet confirming that your cat is fit to travel.
Your vet will advise as the best time to feed your cat prior to the flight. Normally you are not permitted to remove your cat from their carrier during the flight, so check in advance with the airline what arrangements they might have regarding offering your cat some water to drink. Line the bottom of the carrier with a layer of shredded paper, so that if your cat does get caught short during the flight, they won’t have to lay on a damp patch.
My cat never seemed to mind air travel and was always very well behaved, which came as a surprise to me because she always meowed very loudly if I had to take her anywhere in the car.
