Can my cat catch feline leukemia from my friend’s clothes or shoes?
I have an indoor cat which is not vacinated for feline leukemia. My friend’s cat has the disease (and aparently dying of the disease) and rides around in the car with her to keep separate from my friend’s other cats. When my friend comes over can she transmit the disease to my cat by petting her or by my cat sniffing or licking her clothes?
This would make me nervous, too, but from a medical standpoint, it’s very unlikely. The virus doesn’t live long outside the body, so transmission is generally from cat to cat and involves the exchange of fluids – through mating or even spitting, which lands in the tear glands.
Even so, I might limit the “close” interaction just for my own piece of mind.
