Cleaning Kitty Cat
Posted on Monday, April 26th, 2010 at 2:22 am

I have a 8 yr old cat that won’t use the kitty box so we keep him in his own room. What is wrong with that???
I have taken him to the vet…he’s perfectly healty…did get his teeth cleaned though…cat wasn’t too happy about that. He won’t use the cat box…hasn’t since he was a baby. All my other cats do use the cat box. Now I keep him in his own room as his favorite place to pee and poop is on my couches. He’s already ruined $3,000 worth of couches now. I keep reading where it’s mean to keep a cat in his own room. I don’t see how that can be mean. I could take him to a no kill shelter…let him become someone elses problem, then he would pee on their couch, they would be lazy and just take him to a regular shelter and get put to sleep…now which one is meaner? Letting him become someone elses problem and still have him die for it or keeping him in his own room…with his own cat box (which he doesn’t use anyways), his kitty friends get to visit him and his room is connected to the bathroom so he gets to see us more now…than he did when he was roaming the house ruining everything.
It sounds to me as though your cat needs to be an outdoor cat ( like a barn cat) unless he has a medical problem or is declawed. We have a cat on the farm who lives outside all the time because he won’t use a litter box when he’s in. He gets fed outside, and he has shelter in case of bad weather, storms, or lightning and high winds ( which we sometimes get, since Delaware is a coastal state and tropical storms sometimes come through here) and he’s perfectly happy out there. He’s very friendly, loves people ( he will come and sit with you if you are out on the porch steps at the house) and is not afraid of dogs or other animals. He’s also car wise- he knows what the cars are and won’t go near them if the motor is on. People may call us mean for keeping him outside, but he’s like your kitty- he hasn’t used a litterbox in a long time, and he would be MISERABLE in the house. He DID live in the barn for a while, but then he decided that the house and yard were more to his liking. I think you should keep doing what you are doing, unless you think you can relocate your cat to the barn and have him live there. Then it wouldn’t matter where he pees or sprays- most horse people I know usually have at least one barn cat, and those animals will typically use something like the manure pile as a toilet. I DON’T think you should take him to the local shelter- he just has this as an idiosyncracy, but there’s nothing wrong with letting him have his own space if you can do this. Sending him to someone so that they can have him put down is obviously not an option- and it’s worth remembering that many vets will NOT euthanize a perfectly healthy animal for no reason. The fact that this kitty has this issue is NOT going to be enough of a reason for many vets. You aren’t being mean to your kitty- he’s perfectly happy as he is, just like ours is. Good luck.
PS: To N8: This asker lives on a farm, not in an apartment or in a city, and she has her own home, so what you are mentioning about fines doesn’t apply in this situation.
