Opinions about modern cat furniture?
I’m moving to a new apartment with mid-century decor and I would hate to have those ugly scratches and trees. So I’ve decided to look for cat furniture with a modern look. I’ve found lots of great possibilities, quite expensive. And when it comes to cats, they’re so unpredictable and sometimes they prefer the old 10 bucks scratcher than the one that is 100 dollars more expensive. However, I would like to have a good-looking piece. Did anyone ever purchase something like this? What are the overall opinions?
I wouldn’t bother with a big piece. Once it gets scratched up it will look like hell in your house. I have a friend with one and it’s the first thing you see when you come into the room. Which is a shame because you has some gorgeous furniture which is totally overshadowed by this shredded monstrosity.
Instead just get a few smaller posts and the sisal scratchers you can hang on a doorknob. Sprinkle them with catnip to attract the cats. I have four cats and with these not one of them puts their paws on any of the furniture. Another option is to add a floor-to-ceiling 4×4 and wrap it with sisal rope. Friends did this in their apartment and it looks really cool. You don’t really look at it as a cat post it’s just part of the decor but for the cats it’s a great scratching post that really shows little signs of wear and one they can climb up as well.
FYI – contrary to what a lot of people think cat scratching posts do NOT wear down a cat’s claws. Cat claws are like an onion – they’re layers of skin. So scratching on a post only sheds the top layer. Trim them regularly with a good quality cat nail trimmer so they don’t have sharp tips that will snag your furniture should kitty decide to put his or her paws on it.
